Our family adventure crossing oceans and exploring lands
OUR FLOATING HOME
SHE’S NOT JUST OUR BOAT … SHE’S OUR FLOATING HOME…
Our floating home is a 1990 Moody 425 sloop sailing yacht. She’s not just our home but she’s also where we go to school, where we entertain our friends and we take her on holidays with us!
WHAT IS SHE?
Pierina is a Moody 425 blue water sailing yacht that was built in the UK (only half an hour from where Tim was born!). Being built in 1990, means she’s a little older but a whole lot stronger than many modern plastic boats!!
She is 12.7m (42.5′) long with a beam of 4m (13.2′), draws 1.5m (4.9′) and weighs over 10 tonnes all up.
HER NAME?
We chose to call her Pierina pronounced pee-e-rina (with a rolling’r’ if you can manage it!)
WHY DID WE CHOSE HER?
The Moody 425’s are well proven blue water cruisers and Pierinas previous owners had already taken her around the world once (then named ‘Mia’), which gave me much needed confidence in how good she would be for us. Now we’re giving her another chance at that adventure with us!
We chose her for many reasons but I would say a few top priorities included strength and safety, ease of living, her layout and that she has roller furling main and foresail which can all be controlled from the safety of the cockpit.
There were only 2 things that I’d told Tim I wouldn’t do this adventure without…and they were a water maker and a washing machine. As green as I was when I made that statement, I am so glad that I did because life would be very different if we didn’t have these! we would not only be spending loads of money on laundries but we would also be spending loads of time just walking to and carting around heavy loads of washing…its just so nice to be able to do it at home.
Tim has made a tonne of improvements and modifications to Pierina and if you would like to know more about these or her specifications click here: Improvements to our Moody 425
